    free ask statistics questions
    eight of the eleven employs of some corp are men. Suppose that two employees are selected at random with out replacement. Find the probability that the two employees are of the same gender and or of the opposite gender?

    Let's do it like that:

    MMMMMMMMWWW

    M's representing men and W's representing women.

    ------------
    Recall that the probability of having two men chosen is given by:
    1. P(1 man chosen) = no. of men/total people = 8/11
    2. And that without replacement, P(1 man chosen after 1st one is picked) = no. or remaining men/no. of remaining people = 7/10
    3. Therefore, P(2 men chosen) = (8/11) * (7/10) = 56/110 = 28/55
    ------------

    The probability that they are of the same gender is either satisfied by having two men or two women.



    The probability that they are of the opposite gender is satisfied when you have a man and a woman, or a woman and a man.
