Hi, A man at Lowe's recommended panel board nails for nailing my base moldings. That does not sound right to me. They are ribbed and just seem like they are prone to splitting. What nails should I use for a small one room base molding job?

I am absolutely sold on using a nail gun for all moulding work. You get a perfect nail every time - no hammer marks, no splits, no fuss and you can hold the trim in the exact spot you want while you nail.

I know you said it's a small job - do you have a friend with a small brad nailer & compressor?

I'm with RTW, get a finish nailer, this won't be the last time you will need one. I recommend a 15 gauge, with depth control..

If u don't want to buy or use a trim nailer, use 6 penny (6d) finish nails. Stop nailing when about a 1/16 inch from wood. Counter sink nail with nail set. Fill hole with wood putty.

Argh, creahands, although I appreciate all the answers, that's the answer I was looking for. I checked into nailers, saw one that looked like it could do the job and was only $60.00. I don't mind buying tools but I have no place for storing items. Only things I know I will use a lot do I buy now.

Even though the responses were very fast I ended up getting (4d) finish nails as I was getting impatient, so I did not see creahands post. I nailed them in as suggested. Jobs done and looks pretty good.
