    What is causing my sciatica?
Have had sciatic pain since about December 2009. I had a mri done about a month ago and they found a cyst near my right ovary (the sciatic pain is on the right side as well). The mri report said that it was a 4.5 cm cystic structure on my right ovary.

I never got it checked out because I thought that it would just go away-well recently, I went to a spine doctor for a herninated disc they found on the mri. The doctor told me that the herniated disc in my lower back is very small and is not causing the sciatica nerve pain ( I was already previously given steroids and anti-immflammory drugs, but they did nothing). I made an appointment with my gyno, but its not till 2 weeks from now!

I don't know what to do in the meantime. It seems like it is getting worse, and I am have trouble getting comfortable at night because the numbness/tingling sensation has gotten worse, to the point were it is sharp stabbing pain down the side of my right leg.

I just wanted to know if anyone else ever experienced this and could a cyst really cause this much pain? The report indicated that the cyst wasis 4.5 cm. should I expect some form of surgery? Or what are other treatment options? Does anyone know what kind of cyst this could be? Or am I wasting my money by going to countless doctors?

Have you tried going to a chiropractor? My mom used to have a lot of problems when she was pregnant with her sciatic nerve and the chiropractor was always able to adjust her so she wasn't in pain. It wasn't a permanent fix, she'd have to go back regularly. But it helped her a lot.

I have not been to a chiropractor. I was told by a spine specialist that the problem is not from my back.

Did the specialist tell you what is causing it then? Or any further advice on handling it? Have you been back to the specialist?

He said there is a 4.5 cm cystic mass near my right ovary, which is the side I am experience sciatica. I have an appointment next week with the Gyno. The cyst does not cause me any pain, so I am skeptical if this is the problem. He is just a spine doctor, he just said that is most likely causing the problem, but he did not go further into it. He said he was going to refer me to pain management, but I have not received a phone call from them and since he found out it wasn't the herninated disc causing the problem, he might have canceled that referral, but I am not sure.

It sounds like you must be in pain. Why haven't you followed up with his referral yet? Maybe his office needs a little push from you to get things done. Its not fair for you to be in pain because you have to wait for a referral. And if they've canceled the referral, you should find out for sure. It's always important to follow up. I thought my dr's office was just being lousy about returning my calls the other day. I finally got through to a person instead of the answering machine, turned out somehow they had the wrong number on file (even though I've been seeing her for a year and left my number every time I called... )

True, I guess I should have followed up on that. If my genecologist concludes that the cyst is NOT causing the sciatica, then that is my next step.
