I have a leaky tile shower. It is on the second floor and the leak comes into the dining room. (House is less than 10 years old.) Presently, there is a little bit of drywall cut out (in the dining room) where the leak had occurred. I have had two plumbing companies look at the problem and one says that the tile needs to be taken up to replace the shower drain system. This will be quite costly. The other says that the drain can be fixed from going in through the dining room ceiling. SOme drywall and wood would need to be cut away, but all in all this will be less expensive. Both plumbers were pretty strong in their opinion. Both acted as if the other one was stupid. This puts me at a loss. Which one is correct? Are there risks and benefits of fixing the problem either way.

Before I went either way I would want to be absolutely sure it was the drain and not a leak in the tile grout. Let me show you how to check it yourself.
Remove the strainer and either stuff wet rags down the drain or simply blow up a balloon in the drain and tie it off to block t6he drain. Now fill the base with a inch of water and let it set overnight. Next morning check the water level and the ceiling for moisture. Nothing? Let the water out and check again. If still nothing then you have a tile leak and grouting around where the stream hits should cure it. Let me know. Regards, Tom
