Have you considered getting a second opinion? That would be my first step.
If you go to a different vet and get the same diagnosis, they you really have to consider the future of this animal. Are you willing to deal with an animal that will have health issues? Are you willing and able to pay maybe thousands of dollars for this animals care?
I know that I'm the kind of person that would probably adopt the horse (if I could have a horse) just because of it's health problems and the fact that he'll most likely never find a forever home because of them. But that's not always reasonable or the smart thing to do.
This isn't a small animal, this is an animal that requires a lot of care and maintenance fees even when it's in tip top shape.
I'd really think it over logically, not with your heart but with your brain. Can you afford this and can you physically and mentally do this?
