How can I find a 401k from a company that has moved and changed its name?
I forgot that I had a 401k plan in 1992. I worked for First Data Resources in Atlanta, GA. The company has moved and have a new name. How do I begin to search for a 401k that I forgot about?

They should have been sending you a annual report ?

How about reviewing your old tax filings where you would have taken credit ? If you used a company they may have some old files

I assume that you have moved since you keft the company and neglected to let either the 401(k) plan administrator or your former employer know your new address, so you have not been receiveing regular reports in the mail, right? You need to find out who the plan administartor is, then contact them and let them know your current address. I suggest you start by contacting any former colleagues from your old job - your boss perhaps - to ask who the plan admin is. Or do some digging to find out who the successor company is, and contact their HR department. Through Google I found that there is a First Data Corporation headquartered in Atlanta - they used to be part of American Express, which had purchased First Data Resources between 1980 and 1983. So maybe that's the right company. You can learn more about them here: Home | First Data

One last suggestion - since you have been out of touch for so many years it's possible that the 401(k) plan administrator has reported your account as "abandoned" to the state of GA. Here is a free web site that lets you search each state’s database of abandoned assets: Missing Money Free Search for Unclaimed Property - Officially endorsed By The States and Provinces It’s a good idea to do a search on every state you ever lived in to see if there are abandoned assets in your name.
