    W2 Errors and tri-state filing...
    Here's the short version:

From January 1st to July 13th I lived with my wife in Kansas.
We moved to Virginia in July, and I am going to Grad school in D.C. and working for my school part-time.

My W2 for my job in D.C. lists Kansas as my state, but I have not resided in Kansas as long as I've had the job.

But they listed me as exempt from taxes in KS, and so never took out those taxes anyway. We are very poor (lowest income bracket, huzzah for grad school life), and have three kids, so we don't actually owe any taxes usually.

So, do I file this with KS? Do I file it with D.C. as Non-resident (I never filled out the form to live in VA pay in VA, not knowing it existed until this month!)

The kicker is, using an online software, they said that filing in D.C. would earn me an extra $2000 (though I still cannot figure why).

Should I file in D.C. Should I claim this as KS income (since that's on the W2).

    ACK!

Income earned while present in a state must be reported to that state.
