    Why are white and white, black and black, and red and red wired together
    I found a switch box containing 2 black wires wire nutted together, 2 red wires nutted together, 2 white wires wire nutted together. This box was covered with wallpaper and when stripping the room I found this box. There is one ground wire connected to the metal switch box.The black and white wires are hot, the red not.

    The box is being used as a junction box. Was probably a 3 way switch at on time.

I took off the dryer receptical to wire a 250V. 20A electrical receptecal. There are a black white and red. Do I assume the red is green because it's the only wire that doesn't match the directions. Red seems hot though no.
