Add light kit to ceiling fan
I am trying to add a light kit to an existing ceiling fan. I connected the two wires from the light fixture (black and white) to the two wires in the fan "for light fixture" (blue and white) White to white and black to blue. I then turned wall switch on, and no light... I tried pulling the chain, changing the bulb, even trying it on another fan in another room. This seems like a simple project, but I am stumped...

The wires from the ceiling fan to the fixture in the ceiling has to have the blue wire connected there also to the black before the light can work.
Blue and black wire from ceiling fan to black in ceiling and white to white.

I concur. Open the fan at the ceiling and see if the blue is connected.

There is a black, white, and tan wire wire-nutted together coming down from the ceiling... are these the wires you are talking about? The rest of the wires are in the plastic plug that plugs into the control portion below...

From the top of the ceiling fan there should be white, blue and black wires. If you already have the ceiling fan installed then the black wire should be connected to the black from the attic and the white to the white from the attic. Just find the loose blue wire in the top of the fan and remove the wire nut connecting the 2 blacks together and attach it also.
Fast forward on this video to the wiring of the fan:

OK--7 wires coming through the "bottom"of the fan--5 go in to plastic plug that you plug into the "control" portion of the fan(gray, blue, orange, and, black, blue. The other 2 are white and black. They are wire-nutted together with a brown jumper wire coming out of the plastic plug.

You shouldn't have to mess with any plugs from the bottom part of the ceiling fan. The light should just plug into that. You need power to that from up above!
I bought ceiling fans over 20 years ago andf all I did was connect the blue and black wire from the fan to the ceiling and the white to the white and ground to ground. Way before they had plugs for the light kit you would just connect the same colored wires with wire nuts.

Joed, are you talking about in the canopy at the ceiling? There are plugs up there? Is this a remote fan?

No, not at the ceiling. When I took the switch cup cover off, there were two wires that said "for light install", which were a blue and white. The directions with the light kit said to connect the light wires (white and black) to the corresponding white and black(or blue in my case). The only other wires which were loose were an extra white wire, and black wire coming down from the bottom of the fan, and a brown jumper wire coming from the plug... these three wires were wire-nutted together when I first opened the fan up. Just a plastic plug which connects the fan to the switch cup cover. I do not think it is a remote fan.

That seems like the correct and easy way, but it is not working with my application. I have 2 fans and two different light kits I am trying, but still canīt make it work...

Can you post some pictures of what's coming out of the ceiling and what's going into the fan? Then post bottom of fan, canopy and light kit.

I am guessing the red wire is controlled by a different switch, and you probably could have gotten light with the red wire if you'd tried every switch.
