How much parenting time do you thing a Schizophrenia parent should have?
My son's father is diaganosed with schizophrenia and he took me to court to modify his parenting time which has to be supervised and the judge denied it. So he got a lawyer and now we are going back to court. Let me tell you I never denied him parenting time. I am concerned about my child spending a month with a parent that is not mentally stabled. Not only that but my son's father is not apart of his life. So now that I am engaged, now he's trying to come around. We live in different states which makes a difference but I was the one making the effort to bring my son to see him with no financial help. That was back in 2005-2007. Once I stopped, he never made an effort to come see our kid. Yea he sends gifts on occasion but he was never around. My son only knows my fiancé as his dad. What do you think about that. Should I get a lawyer as well?

Yes, I suggest you get a lawyer because I think probably he (your ex) is getting out of hand and his condition may be causing this. Situations are somewhat magnified with schizophrenia depending on what type of meds he is on.

You don't say how old your son is. That would help to sort of figure this out a little more.

Your ex can't try to come around. One judge has already denied access unless supervised. I don't see how this can go in his favour even with a lawyer because he can't deny his medical condition.

I still suggest you get a lawyer to set your mind at ease.

Get a lawyer and do what you think is right for your child. It's hard to say what is appropriate because the degree to which a schizophrenic can function varies enormously. From a personal perspecive, my mom was a schizophrenic and with hindsight I would say that any unsupervised time spent with her was too much. It took me a lot of years to get over some of the things she said and did to me when we were alone together because of her illness. Don't let this happen to your child.
