    Natural gas fireplace troubleshooting
I have a gas fireplace that you turn on by a wall switch. Was working fine for months but then today turned it on and it made a loud "poof" sound and the flames were really really big and way too high compared to normal. I just turned it off. Any ideas what I should check? Or was that just its way of blowing off some built up dust or sand or carbon or whatever? What could be wrong?

My dad said that even though the pilot light isn't on it's emitting gas into the house- which is a health hazard, but I thought that as long as the switch that turns on the light is off there is no risk. Can anyone tell me...
