I have had a Mirena IUD in for 4 years now & then in mid August I started gushing with blood. I have not had a period for over 3 years now so I knew straight away that something was wrong when the bleeding started. I called my ob & got in to see him two days later. He said that perhaps there is a problem with the IUD & recommended taking it out and coming back a few weeks later to see if the bleeding had settled & have a new IUD inserted. The bleeding didn't settle after the removal, it got worse. I was passing massive clots & had cramping and dizziness three days later. I called the doctor & was told it will all settle down just give it time. When I went back for my follow up appointment the bleeding was only just easing the day before so he performed an ultrasound and said that there were polyps growing in my uterus as well as a big mass of blood there too. He recommended surgery to do a biopsy of the polyps & curet to clean it all out & then whilst I was under inserted the new IUD.
Now I have just been back for my follow up appointment to check the position of the IUD and was told that the patholgy from the biopsy has come back and it wasn't polyps in my uterus it was in fact the remains of a pregnancy. He didn't say how far I was but said that he has never seen or heard of anyone falling pregnant with the Mirena. Clearly lots of people have because I have googled it this morning and am astounded at how many people have fallen.
I am worried now that I have this new IUD in and that the chances are I could fall again. Does anyone know if there is an increased risk of falling again if I have already ? I think my hubby will have to go & have the snip but that is not effective immediately. Any suggestions?

No birth control is 100% effective. I haven't heard anything about an increased risk if you already have. As far as I know you still stand the same chance as you did before you got pregnant the first time.

I can't believe that your doctor actually told you that pregnancy with the IUD wasn't possible at all, that he had never heard of a pregnancy occurring with an IUD. Is he a foot doctor?

No form of birth control is 100% effective. You decrease the chances when you use birth control, but the chance is still there.

The only way to have sex without the possibility of pregnancy is a tubal ligation or a vasectomy.
