    How to hook up two 200 amp panels off 400amp service
    Hi Friends,

    I hope you can help. I need to install two 200 amp services off my 400 amp line. I have a400 amp meter installed from the transformer to the pumphouse. At this time I need a 200 amp panel in the pumphouse and I need a 200 amp panel up at the new cabin. Now how do I hook both services up? Thanks for the help!

    Based on the info provided, you hook it up black to black, red to red, and white to white.

    Now that I got the silly answer out of the way, do you mean electrically or mechanically.

    We need more info, picutres will help, as for us to tell you how to "hook" it up, we need to know what you have.

    If you have to ask this question in such simplistic terms you might be much better off having a pro do it.

    Right now there are one set of wires (for 200 amp serv) hooked up to the lugs at the 400 amp meter. I'm planning on "piggybacking" and hooking up the other 200 amp service by putting the wires in the same lugs. If they won't fit I'll get some bigger lugs. This seems to be the way to go when I speak with others. Do you agree? Thanks for the help guys.

    Stan40man if you don't understand laymans terms maybe you're not qualified to answer these questions and we should only discuss with those who do.

    A lug usually is only rated for one conductor. Some, not many, lugs are rated to accept more than one conductor, need to confirm what the lugs you have can handle.

    Most times we install two port lugs, one port for each conductor.

    As TK correctly stated. Use double lugs. Using single lugs for two conductors is a nice code violation and not smart.

    Yeah, I am completely unqualified. I haven't done a few dozen of these either. :rolleyes: I'll keep out of it.

    I left the comment to Stan alone till I saw his response.

    Stan is more than qualified to answer any question about electrical.

    Even my point about the question was that the question was much too vague, and needed detail, and we both broke our crystal balls a long time ago.

    Stan can be a bit more direct.
