    OTC pain medication
I suffered a dog bite at work yesterday, that tore the skin and punctured quite deep. It's at the site of a joint so it's quite painful.

I was just curious as to what may be the best over the counter pain medication to get? I live in Canada.

You need to go to the hospital to have this bite cleaned out. You don't want to risk infection.

Already been flushed quite extensively at work. I called my doctor and he basically said if it starts to look infected to come in and see him, otherwise just keep an eye on it and keep it clean.

The OTC med I would recommend would be motrin. It is an antiinflammatory as well as a pain reliever.

You're welcome. And I am so glad to hear that you took care of this bite at work and got in touch with your doctor. Hope all goes smoothly for you and it heals quickly.

Me too. The wounds are on my index and middle finger of my right hand, which renders me kind of useless at work for now.

Sariss, I know how much dog bites hurt. When I was surveying, I was bitten several times. The worst was from a chow. And he bit me on my knee, so I know the joint pain you're experiencing. My bite became infected, like J-9 mentioned, so watch it.

I am recovering from hip surgery, I had core decompression back in January, and still have another 10 months of serious pain. Being an addict,(in successful recovery) I am taking Motrin like J-9 suggested. The dose I am taking is prescription strength. It's 800 mg. and it doesn't completely take the pain away, but it takes the edge off quite well. The dose you get from the retailer that handles it, is typically 200 mg. Unless your doctor is against it, you can take 4 of those at the peak of your pain. Take this medicine, like most, with food.

I commend you for taking mild pain medicine, as narcotic ones are quite addicting. Trust me, I know all too well. I have proven time and time again, that I can't take narcotic pain medicine responsibily, so I simply choose to live through the pain. The pain of addiction is much, much worse.

My I ask what your job is that makes you come in contact with dogs? Are you a mail carrier? A Vet?

Take care, and see you on the board.

I've been icing it regularly - it helps at least.

This is not my first dog bite, but probably my worst.
I work as a Veterinary Technician (animal nurse) so the risk is always there, and always pretty high.
The girls at work joked I should try some of the pain medications at work, but that of course probably isn't very legal, and they were joking anyway. :p
