Wiring a furnace thermostat to manually operate the furnace fan

I have two wires connected to my furnace thermostat. There is a place labeled G on the thermostat. Can I simply run a wire from the G terminal on my thermostat to the terminal labeled G on my furnace fan relay to operate the fan separately?

I believe that when we re-run the program with the correct date and time, if the temp has to go up, the furnace runs until it gets the appropriate temp, then it turns off and when it does that, the thermostat also turns off going to the HOLD state.:confused:

I've got a gas log fire place that can only be on or off, but I would really like to connect a thermostat to it so that it can control its self. Seems like I would just need to connect the thermostat so that it is wired into the on/off wires of the fire place, Right? I'm not sure what I would...
