Craftsman tractor will not go in reverse
Hello, I have a Craftsman tractor. I just replaced the bracket and torsion spring that hold the shifter arm on. The tractor runs great in forward but will no longer go in reverse. Any ideas. Thanks, Deb

    Hi,
Numbers always help; but these transaxles have gears for forward and a chain for reverse. A broken chain could cause this.
    Peace,

Since you just replaced the shifter bracket it is also possible that it is just out of adjustment. If I remember correctly the bracket is able to be moved back and forth once it is mounted and not completey tightened. You might try loosening the bolts and moving the bracket one way or the other to see if this helps.

I have a 26 HP craftsman riding tractor. I began not wanting to engage in reverse about two weeks ago. Now it completely stopped going into gear at all. Could it be the drive belt or something else?

Typically the drive belt will not affect just one direction. I doubt that is it. Is this a 6 speed or a hydrostatic?

It is Hydrostatic, also when it completely stopped going into gear, the brake petel came all the way back as if a cable may have broken.

Any chance you have the model number available? I can figure it out a lot easier with that.

I just re-read your first post. It said that it didn't want to go into reverse at first and now it won't go into gear at all. Does that mean it will not go forward or reverse? If so, then it is possible that it could be a belt. Although they do not usually start to go out by not going into one or the other gear. I would be more likely to lean toward an issue in the transaxle. But, by all means check the belts first. (much cheaper repair... )

I am unfamiliar with the larger tractors like you have. Maybe one of the professional can offer a better opinion on this matter.

Sounds like your ground control spring could have came off or broke, this would keep the pedal from returning.
As far as not going into gear check make sure belt is in al pulleys and check adjusting link on hydro shifter ,make sure its still attached.

    LUCK
