    You use the 5/16" lag bolt to screw into the diverter spindle until it grabs well enough to put a pair of pliers on the head of the lag bolt and YANK the spindle forward....no need to go too deep. Be careful not to yank the valve out of the wall...;) Hold against yourself when pulling and it will come out. You may even need to push forward and then try to remove again. These can be stubborn!
