    How do you transfer custody without lawyers and the people are in different states?

    Depends on who you are "transferring custody" to? Are you the custodial parent and is the person you are transferring custody to the other parent?

    A limited power of attorney is the simplest way. Be sure to include such things as authority to authorize medical care and enroll the child in school. Understand that such a POA is revocable.
