    Exercise and school
I walk an hour a day (with the dog) and just completed a 16 km hike on Monday in four hours and 20 minutes. It was a moderately difficult rated trail... I have also been splitting and stacking wood for the last two days ( 9 cord in total now is what I've split and put in) in September I will be heading off to forestry college but last year is when I sortof stopped really exercising. I've gained upwards of 30 to 40 pounds in the last few years (2 years) At my college we have a brand new free all hours access gym and weight room... what should I be doing to help get back into shape. I can lift well, can walk long distances but I can't run far or jog. I don't want to lag behind everyone in the woods and want to be able to compete in woodsman competitions (have you ever seen them chopping wood and such in competitions on TV... ) so what kind of exercise regime should I do.. ill have access to very healthy foods, fresh air and lots of time once school work is done ( I don't know anyone there)

Lift weights. Concentrate on compound lifts using free weights like squat, deadlift, bench press, military press, stiffleg deadlift, bent over bow, pull-ups, dips, lunges, hyper-extension, wood choppers.

Walk to start with, but then try to add some running. You can do routines where you run for 30 seconds, walk for 60, run for 30 etc, and work up from there. You can also do things like rowing and cycling.

Vary your workouts as much as possible. If it's available, have a go at martial arts or boxing, or any other sport you haven't tried. Stretch after workouts. Work out intensely in the gym, the fat burning zone is a myth.

Name of exercise [ 6 Answers ]

What is the name of this exercise. I think it is used in football where you start standing up then go to your knees and then to the pushup position. Then you stand up. I'm hoping I explained this correctly. Is it a core exercise or what?
