Fuel shut-off solenoid hot - is this normal
I have a Craftsman riding mower with B&S 15.5 OHV engine. When trying to start, the motor turns but it will not start. Have replaced spark plug. I was checking for loose wire connections and noticed the fuel solenoid at the bottom of the carburetor bowl, was really hot. I had accidentally left the switch in the "on" position for about 5 minutes or less from my last starting attempt before this, so I guess it was getting juice that way? Is this normal or could this be an indication of it not working, and perhaps be the problem with not starting?

    Hi,
The fuel shutoof solenoid does not normally get hot. Could be a sign it is stuck, partially shorted or is getting power from a source with too much amperage available.
It will generally click when it opens upon turning the key to On. Some are fairly quiet opening, but you should be able to feel it open. Most are quieter closing than opening.
    Peace,
    Clarke

Thanks for the response. Is there an easy way to determine if it's getting too much amperage? I do have access to a volt/ohm meter.

    Hi,
Unfortunately not easily. If you remember meter usage, voltage is measured in parallel but amperage is measured with the meter directly in series with the circuit. That means the meter must have all the current flow through it, so it must have a high enough setting.
Lets go back to the not starting part. Check the engine for fire. If I had to hazard a guess, it does not have any. Battery voltage directly through the ignition switch to the ignition will blow the secondary. This could be your indicator of where your problem is. I suggest that you unplugged the ignition ground first; should be a rectagular plug near the starter and dipstick. This also may go to the fuel solenoid, but you are checking for the presence of ignition.
    Peace,

I did check for spark with a screwdriver and the sparkplug wire to and did get one.

    Hi,
Okay. How about any indication that the solenoid is opening and closing. It is easier to hear or feel it open.

Checked the solenoid for the clicking and heard it once. Disconnected wire, flipped it with my finger, reconnected it and PRESTO, we have ignition. I think the mower gods must be on my side today (they must have been off for the July 4th the past 2 weeks). Did stop and restart a few times and let run awhile, but all seems back to normal. We'll see...
Thanks once again to you, crigby. I see you too are in NC. Hope your day finishes as good as mine.
    Cheers!
