Adding pudding or applesauce will moisten a cake. Find a recipe that includes it, or add 1/4 - 1/2 cup to a box of cake mix. Mix the batter really well. The biggest problem is usually the oven temperature. Bake it on 300 degrees. It will take longer to get done but will turn out softer.

Closing it in an air tight container will help moisten it some, but don't leave it in for days because then it becomes moldy too fast.
Sounds like you over baked it.

It sounds like it was baked for too long. While your baking, use the toothpick method. If the toothpick comes out clean, then it's done. As well, try to remove it from the pan as soon as you can, because it will continue cooking if you leave it in a hot pan. As soon as you've taken the cake out of the pan, wrap it in saran wrap. It is essentially doing the same job as the sealed container, this just works better. Leave the cake in the saran wrap until you are ready to icing the cake. Once you icing the cake, the icing makes a barrier so the moisture won't release.

You've just burnt it, try again! Try checking up on it every 5-10 minutes.
