Sick dog.desperate
Is there anyone who can help with our dog? She got sick earlier this week. She kept throwing up and couldn't poop. We took her to the vet on Tuesday and picked her up Wednesday. They said she had a stomach virus and was dehydrated. We've been giving her the meds they gave us. They said she was eating everything they put in front of her and was pooping fine, just a little runny. At home, she's still throwing everything up and hasn't gone to the bathroom since we picked her up from the vet. Now she won't eat anything at all. She's barely drinking any water. Someone told us to give her mineral oil to help with her bathroom problems, but she threw it up. We don't know what else to do with her. Any advice would be appreciated.

Who told you to give her mineral oil ? Not a good thing
This is not a happy dog, misdillon. Could be you are fussing over her too much. Dogs don't need that. They don't get fussed over at the vet and have to wait their time.
If she know where her fresh cool water is, just worry about that for now. She must drink, but Don't FUSS OVER HER.
What kind of dog is she, how much does she weigh and how old is she ?
Lets start from there.

No, we are not fussing over her too much, if she is sick, she needs help. You don't know how miserable she is right now.

If she is dehydrated, she should probably be on IV fluids. You should take her back to the vet.

When she was at the vet they gave her an IV and anitbiotics. They said she was better, but we've seen no improvement since we've had her home. There has only been a decline.

Did they do x-rays at all? If they didn't, that really should be the next course of action. I worry about something like a foreign body.

no, they didn't do x-rays. That will probably be what we do next once we can finally get ahold of a vet. Another person suggested parvo, which causes dehydration. She drank a cup of water about half an hour ago and threw it up within 5 minutes. She hasn't kept anything down since yesterday morning.

If she had parvo she would most likely be having explosive diarrhea.
The vets are closed, but if you call around I bet you can get a hold of one that has a vet on call. Be prepared to pay an after-hours fee, but it may be the only option.

Hi, sariss and misdillon, still kind of hard to say, and you still haven't said what type of dog and how old. It makes a difference to answers and direction.

True, but a vomitting dog that is also constipated should be seen as soon as possible, especially if it has not improved since being treated at the vet.
What meds have been given for her?

How old is your dog and what type of dog is it ? Is the dog normally healthy and active.
Sariss, you don't even know where these people are located ? They could be in some kind of outback where no vet can be located for a number of days.

She's a redbone coon hound, she's about 3 years old. I'm not sure exactly what they gave her. They put her on IV when we took her in. They sent us home with an antibiotic pill and a pill and powder that were supposed to help her runny stool.

I don't know where they are located correct, but there really is nothing you or I can tell them here that will help their dog, and she really should be seen as soon as possible to rule out things such as an obstruction.
But that's true. Ms, have you tried contacting vets nearby today? Are there any close?
How often is she vomiting? What does it look like?
Check her gums, what colour are they? Press your finger down on her gums just above her canine tooth and then let go. How long does it take for the colour to return?
Also, grab the skin between her shoulder blades or on the back of her neck, gently pull it up into a tent and twist it slightly. Does it spring back to place immediately? If not, how long does it take?

sounds like she has a blockage. Why did you vet not perform an x-ray? Take he to a vet as soon as possible.

I don't know why the vet didn't do an x-ray. My sisters dog was also sick and I think the vet assumed it was the same thing and didn't do very much different. We called all the vets in town (small town, not very many) and none answered (not even their "emergency" numbers). Being a holiday, I'm not surprised. We'll try again tomorrow, but on Sunday, I don't know. We'll just nurse her until then.
She's pretty much throwing up everything we've given her. She drank a little water about 20 minutes ago and has kept it down. We'll continue to watch and feed/water her a little at a time all through the night and see how that goes.
We talked to a dog breeder and she said to give her baby meat food and peanut butter. She also said to give her pedialyte. Hopefully she'll be able to keep enough down to help nourish her.

Just give her pedialyte for now. Did you try the things I asked you about the gums and the skin?

No, haven't tried those yet. We got up every two hours during the night and forced down 4 tsp of pedialyte and a little peanut butter or baby food. She kept almost all of it down and has started to pee again. She also seems to have a little bit more energy. We'll keep forcing her fluids and food every two hours until she willingly takes them or until we can get her to see someone.

Try to avoid the baby food, a lot of them contain onion powder which is very bad for dogs.
Try some boiled skinless chicken.
I haven't met a dog yet that will refuse warm chicken.

We might try the chicken thing once we're sure she's not going to throw everything up. Until then I think we're going to stick to slightly less solid things.
