First offense, theft under 5000 (5.75$) in canada
Greetings
Two days ago I was caught shoplifting from a local grocery store. This is canada. I am 23. This was my first offense. I signed a letter of apprehension that said I was apprehended for theft under 5000 and was told I would be contacted by the provincial courts. The loss prevention officer also told me that it would be no big deal and that it would be erased from my record in 1-2 years. None of this makes sense. Was he just trying to scare me? I feel like dying-can anyone offer me any suggestions/advice/knowledge?
Would circumstances I conveyed to him mean anything (unemployed, first offense, the fact I was shaking uncontrollably)? Or does he just hand this file over to the police and then they deal with it?

MissVic. No he wasn't kidding. I live on Ontario. Yes, consider yourself lucky it will be erased in l to 2 years. Most offences stay for a lot longer then that. Maybe he was trying to scare you. Did it work ? I hope so, because doing another one like this will ruin you for life my dear.
You are unemployed, okay, so join the club of most people in Ontario, or anywhere in Canada. You are 23. Well trying being unemployed at 50 and stealing to support your family.
Yes, he turns it over and it gets dealt with. Maybe you will have to go to court, be charged. It all depends on who you stole from. Maybe they will feel sorry you.
Why did you do it ?
Greetings

Thanks tickle
It was a medium sized grocery store. I do not know why I did it. It seems as if I does not matter whether they feel sorry for me-do they not have to hand it over to the police-then when THAT happens-it is out of their control?
I did it because I wanted it and I have little money at the moment and I feel utterly hopeless. I was not thinking correctly-i thought I could get away with it-i was wrong. I have no clue how many times I have thrown up since then and how little sleep I have gotten. I do not REALLY want my life to be over.
I hear such varying opinions as to what is going to happen to me.
Do you have any clue how long the crown will take to contact me? And how does it just disappear from my record?

Vic, you will have to wait, if they have your proper address, and they contact you.
Do you have family nearby ?
You are 23 and without a job ? What happened ? What province do you live in?
So many questions I have for you. This isn't right, Vic.

I am in because. Family is several hours away. Yeah nothing feels right. I was depressed, etc. prior to this-but now... urhg.
They do have the proper address. I was completely upfront and cooperative with them-largely because I felt like trash.
Would I actually have to waste some judges time or do I just deal with some receptionist that takes my info and (gulp) fingerprints me? Does that happen? Will I have a mugshot? I hate all this not knowing.

Your first offence is quite easy, but you will have to wait unless you want to go down to the station where the arresting officer works out of. No mugshot, no fingerprints, Vic. Just be patient, don't sweat it, Don't DO IT AGAIN. Canada is so unforgiving of offenders, which is good to a point.
