What message or error do you get when trying to update

This helped me, try this is cannot hurt, but if it does not, post errors

    Start, run type
    Regsvr32.exe wuaueng.dll
And hit enter and try to update

Some time has passed since the question was made but I decided to reply anyway - it may help someone. And I didn't see this cure anywhere here, and the problem may exist even after you've installed Sp3.

I've done the procedure several times, when reinstalling, and it's always helped me to download and / or install MS updates for XP, in case it hasn't been working right.

    1. Download on your desktop:

    http://download.windowsupdate.com/v7...gent30-x86.exe

The link should be alive, I tested it 5 minutes ago. In case it isn't I have the file uploaded
    at http://www.mediafire.com/file/3u4myi...gent30-x86.exe

It's a freely distributable file, no copyright issues.

    2. Click your Start button, and Run.

    3. In the "open" field write

    cmd

    and press OK.

    4. Now you'll get a black window. Write (or paste), pressing Enter after each row,

    cd %userprofile%
    cd työpöytä
    WindowsUpdateAgent30-x86.exe /wuforce

NOTE: You can copy and paste the text: left click on upper left corner of the window
(there probably is a C:\ mark), choose Edit > Paste.

It starts a process that should do it (has done for me several times).

    5. Reboot, and try to update (or do the extras).

    ===============================

The following is extra, I've never needed it, but I give it out of respect for the person who wrote this all; it's from a Finnish page "somewhere along my adventures in Computerland". This deletes any temp files, assuring you start with a clean table, after reboot.

    5. Again press Start, and Run.

    6. In Open, write cmd, click OK.

    7. Again you get the black window. Pressing Enter after each row, write (or paste)

    net stop WuAuServ
    net stop bits
    net stop cryptsvc
    ren %windir%\SoftwareDistribution SDold
    ren %windir%\system32\Catroot2 CR2old
    net start WuAuServ
    net start bits
    net start cryptsvc

    8. Reboot, and try to update.

... comes 9: Best of luck and success! :)

    4. Now you'll get a black window. Write (or paste), pressing Enter after each row,

    cd %userprofile%
cd työpöytä<<<<< this should be Desktop / your language
    WindowsUpdateAgent30-x86.exe /wuforce
