Adopted Child/Now Adult but SS Card says "NOT FOR EMPLOYMENT"
Hello everyone! Here's my question/dilemma. My niece (21) is seriously dating a guy who is 21yrs old. My question is in regards to him. His excuse for not looking for work is always "I can't because my Soc. Sec. Card says "NOT FOR EMPLOYMENT"... Uuuhhh, can someone please help! He was born in Mexico and adopted at age 2 by his Aunt and Uncle who are legal citizens but won't give him any info. He's not sure if the adoption was ever finalized although he was raised/publicly school in San Diego, CA since he was 2yrs old. Now he is 21yrs old with a Mexican ID and a U.S. Social Security card that reads "Not For Employment". My niece and him are to nieve (that's putting it politely) to look into this. I'm only concerned because as the youngest and most successful person in my family I always seem to be the one raising my older siblings children.

Thanks in advance and God bless!

You need to find out from him or his parents what his immigration status is. It was standard procedure for many years to get a SSN for anyone in the US. This does not mean he is lawfully in the US.
