Hi I had an abortion on may 1st... (not happy about it by the way)... and after I got everything done they gave me an antibiotic called doxycyline which is 100 mg... they said it was so I didn't get an infection... but I just don't understand why I would possibly get an infection anyway... can you tell me why? I mean I had a baby before and my uterus was open more then it is now... and they didn't gie me any infection medicine then... so I'm just wondering is this medicine strong and is it safe... and even worth taking.. or you think they gave it to me for another reason?

Antibiotics are commonly given after an abortion to prevent possible infection on the off chance the abortion was incomplete. After childbirth, they would obviously see the baby and be able to examine the placenta to be sure it is all intact. Some women do receive antibiotics after birth if they had a vaginal injury or if part of the placenta is retained and removed.

O OK... so say they didn't get everything... does that mean I have to go through that again... or does it come out... I know I go back in like 2 weeks for my checkup... but what happends if they didn't get everything?

Abortion is not easy on the women's body or mind. So you need to take the medication. ABORTION is an unnatural procedure it is invasive and there is always risk of infection. So you need to make sure you take your medication. Also you need to make sure that you have some healing time physically as well. Since you did have an abortion I would assume that you do not want to have children and that you will abstain from having sex for a certain period, and when your resume regular activities that you protect yourself so you do not get pregnant again.

This is one of the things they check for when you go back. If it is determined that the procedure was incomplete you might end up with a D & C needing to be done. It is a relatively quick procedure... in most cases you are asleep, and you wouldn't remember much afterwards.
