    Amending 1040NR-EZ
    Hey everyone...

I've been reading some of the posts here and I must say that it is very helpful. So I figure I can ask advices for my own taxes problems...

So, I have been here in US since 2000 using F-1 visa, did my undergrad and now finishing up my PhD. I worked and have been working from 200 up to now and have always been filing 1040NR-EZ for my tax return. And only recently (last week) that I found out that I was supposed to file my tax return as "resident for tax purpose" starting from the fiscal year of 2006 because I've been here in US for more than 5 yrs (only went home 2 weeks/year if any).
So, I recalculated everything on the right form this time (1040EZ) and because I am now able to use the maximum standardized deduction ($5150 for 2006 and $5350 for 2007), it turned out that the IRS owed me money (all together for both years is about $1500). I only received merely total of $100 of tax returns for those 2 yrs and I thought that was strange but I didn't really do/say anything to anyone until last week.

So, I filled the 1040X to amend my 2006 and 2007 tax return. I did everything by myself because H&R Block and Turbo Tax (and etc) couldn't help with nonresident tax return. My question is:

1). Is this the right thing to do? Or am I just inviting problems? FYI, I have nothing to hide, so if IRS wants to audit me then I am completely fine with it.

2). Should I be worry about penalties and such since I did not owe the IRS money but they do?

3). Also, since I filed the wrong form infor my 2007 tax return (1040NR-EZ), I did not receive any stimulus check. Was I actually entitled to get it? I was't really sure SO I put $600 on my recovery rebate credit on my 2008 1040-EZ. I included a statement explaining everything that is going on including telling them that I filed for 1040X for my 2006 abd 2007 tax return since I filled the wrong forms and that I am now considered as "resident for tax purpose".

4). If I was indeed entitled for the stimulus money that was given out last year, how much was I entitled for? I am single with no child.

Anyway, sorry this is so long but I just need some advice/help or anything really.

    Thanks again!

    1) Yes, it IS the correct way to file, for, in 2005, 2006 and 2007, you WERE a resident alien.

    2) No penalties if you are getting a refund from the amendment.

    3) If you got the RRC, do not worry about the stimulus rebate.

    4) $600 most likely.
