My 2 year old grandson can't talk
My grandson who lives with me can communicate with you like bring you a glass if he is thirsty or go to the refrigerator when he is hungry or even at the store he will listen to you when I tell him no or come this way and also a lot other things like I will say bath time he will run and get in the tub but he grunts or tries to baby babble. He won't sit still for books and I have bought every video I could find Like Baby Einstein Nothing helps what can I do. My daughter is a teenager the father is not involved the kid doesn't have a lot of interaction in his life with other children I thought of finding a day care to put him in for a couple of hours a day I don't know.

First get him evaluated for a speech delay. You pediatrician can give you a referral. Rather than daycare... join some mommy and me classes.

The fact that he understands you says a lot about him. He hears you and understands simple commands. All kids begin talking at different ages. My son is almost 2 and really isn't "talking"- my pediatrician says that he seems to be developing fine. He lets me know if he's thirsty, runs to his crib when I say bedtime and tries to repeat simple words. He's in a small daycare but he's more of and "observant" child.

What has his pediatrician said? How is he doing with his other developmental milestones?

Have you thought about Speech Therapy?
When my brother was 2 years old, and I wasn't even a year yet, I talked better and more then he did. That was when my mom realized there was a problem. My brother did the same thing that your grandson is doing, he could tell you what he wanted without actually saying it.. he would also grunt also.
Speech Therapy, was the best thing for him and there was no problem with him speaking at all after he went to a few classes.

I have a soon to be three year old nephew who has a lot of speech problems as well and never gets to interact with other children because my sister lives so far away from civilization. We think he might have a speech and learning impairment but never got him tested yet. As for your grandson honestly it sounds like he has A.D.H.D. where he can't sit still but whatever you do don't let him be put on riddeline. It will change him. As for him interactng day care sounds like a good idea. Take him to the park and maybe throw his birthday party and invite all the neighbors children. He'll gradually learn how to get along.

Sounds like he doesn't have to talk. You do it all for him. I mean this in the best of intentions as my youngest son was this way.

You need to make him talk. And by this I mean if he wants a glass of juice, make him say juice.

"Johnny do you want juice? Say juice." That sort of thing.

2 year olds are like a sponge, they listen and they learn. But they are also lazy for the most part. If they don't have to work to get what they want, they won't.

He's too young to be diagnosed as ADHD. He can talk you just have to make him tell you what he wants. I had the same problem with my son who is now 7. What I wouldn't give for him not to be talking, LOL. I can't get him to be quiet now.

Just don't give him what he wants until he asks for it. It takes some coaxing, and a lot of patients. But at 2 years old, unless there are underlying medical conditions i.e. ear infections, he is just pulling your leg so that he doesn't have to do the work himself.
