Are pain killers such as Lortab and Percocet safe to take during pregnancy?
I am about 4.5 months pregnant and have a bad back due to a very serious car accident. I was told by my doctor that pain killers are safe as long as I do not get addicted, obviously, that would mean that my baby would be addicted. I would like a little more feedback and that is factual only please! Thanks!

You certainly can get addicted to the painkillers if you take them on a regular basis. As for how quickly you would get addicted, it really is different for everyone. I was addicted to Lortabs myself and I honestly don't know exactly at what point I got addicted, but my best guess would be that it was within about 2 to 3 months of taking them on a regular schedule.

Some doctors are willing to prescribe painkillers during pregnancy and some are not, so there's kind of a disagreement or uncertainty that they are safe. If your Dr says it's OK, and you follow his instructions closely you may be allright. There is always the chance that you will become addicted though, whether pregnant or not. It's pretty much a guarantee that you will become addicted if you take them on a regular schedule.

It's a gamble, really. If you're in a lot of pain the benefits may outweigh the risks.

Withdrawal sucks big time, when I went through it it lasted a long time and it was the hardest thing I think I ever had to go through in my life.

Could you provide a little more info, such as what the dosage/strength of the pills would be and how many you would be taking per day? Would you be taking them on a regular schedule or just one here and there? Those factors would help in giving you a better or more precise answer.

Medicine crosses through to the placenta, so taking anything more than a Tylenol, runs a risk. What risk? You may not know until birth or beyond.
