    Second floor is always cold.
I own a 2 story home that is always cold.I can put the heat on 70 and the upstairs will only reach 54.I have to place electric heaters in all 3 bedrooms.(up).. The main floor is warmer but I use the wood fireplace to help. All ducts are open and have been cleaned.Does anyone have any ideas on what the problem may be? Do you think I may need a new furnace?

Sounds like the duct work is not sized right to get the air to the 2nd floor. Is there dampers in the duct work they can be closed? Is this a new home?Did this just started?you may need to zone the house. Tell us some more

If the thermostat is located on the "toasty" 1st floor, the 2nd floor may be cold because the system isn't aware it's cold up there. Try this: set the thermostat fan selector switch to "ON" for a few hours. Does the 2nd floor get any warmer?

Yes the fan is working and there are dampers. We had checked and they are all open... This is not a new home and this is our 3rd winter in it and finally getting tired of the cold... The thermostate is located on the first floor in a hall. Not by the fireplace or register.I will try the fan thing and get back to you...

Heat always rises, if there is enough of it. Sounds like you may have some insulation or draft problems. Are there supply vents on the second floor? And is there heat coming out of them? Some adjustment to the vents may help, but if you don't have a return air vent on the second floor, there is little to circulate the warm air other than stratification.
