    take 2n as even number, then 2n + 2 as the next even number

    2n + (2n+2) = 1998

    solve for n, and then find out what 2n is. That's your even number. 2n + 2 is your consecutive even.

    1998/2 = 999

    answer = 999 - 1 = 998
    answer = 999 + 1 = 1000

    998 + 1000 = 1998
