Dependent(H4) education expenses and tax returns.
    Hi there,

This is a question about dependent education expenses and tax returns.

I am an Indian and My wife is on a H4 continuing her education. I paid all her fees(around 25K) in 2008. Just wanted to know how to claim it /How much of the fees paid can I get back etc. in my tax returns. This is just a curious question, I read some where that educational expenses are non taxable?

    Thanks in advance.

    Thank you,
    K

If you file jointly with your wife and you both choose to be treated as resident aliens for all of 2008, then you are entitled to claim either a Hope Education Credit (if your wife is either a freshman or sophomore in an undergraduate program), a Lifetime Learning Credit (for ANY college education), or a tuition deduction up to $4,000 as an adjustment to income.

You will get form 1098-T from the institutions and must complete Form 8917.
