I have never used adhesive but put ceiling tiles up with a staple gun. Why would you want to put ceiling tiles up on a bare ceiling ? Ceiling tiles I am thinking of are made of particle board.

Fiber board tiles aren't normally adhered directly to a ceiling,as tickle said stapling them is the common method.

Using 1 X 2 wood strips and nailing them to the ceiling, then stapling to them is the normal method.
