Asbestos tiled floor, safe to wax or carpet over?
The school where I teach has an asbestos floor in my classroom. The custodians say simply waxing over will keep it a "Safe" floor. Does it? And, the district is considering putting carpet over the tiles. Will this eliminate the asbestos hazard or should they be removed? Thanks.dk

Both are acceptable solutions. Every school in the US has had to pass asbestos standards, sealing and encapsulation are acceptable approaches. Asbestos is only hazardous when it becomes friable or turns to a dust and gets in the air. Ask you administrator for his asbestos abatement evaluation report. If he does not have one call the EPA and give them his name and number, he'll have one oon.

Thanks ikdk, I've worked in schools for 36 years and they are generally the safest places to work if you are in the USA, just don't know about other countries.
