Angular Cheilitis
I was wondering if anyone on this board suffers from Angular Cheilitis? I tend to get it in only one corner of my mouth. I was told this is due to a few things... bad immune system, not enough iron, not enough riboflavin... I am young... 30... If anyone has had this, how do you stop it or prevent it... or make it better.. ANYTHING?! Thank you

Many B vitamin deficiencies result in minor skin irritations and Riboflavin is a B vitamin. (Vitamin B2). Do you eat well? Riboflavin deficiency results in Angular Cheilosis/cheilitis, but Riboflavin Deficiency is usually accompanied by othe vitamin deficiencies as well. I don't know where you're located, but if you are in an industrialized country, the average diet of your society should provide adequate vitamins. Do you have an eating disorder? Are you receiving adequate nutrition? Eat plenty of dairy products, green leafy vegetables, enriched breads, lean meats, eggs and so on. If your condition persists, see a physician. It may be something other than AC.

Thank you for your response. I am 30 years old and I live near NYC. I eat normally every day.. usually a bagel for breakfast with my coffee lol... then a salad for lunch with some pasta and then fish or meat at night. I do take Zoloft and I was told that antidepressants take nutrients away from the body and that could be the cause. I have been on the zoloft for two years and that's when I noticed it happenning at first. I did see a dermatologist and he gave me some kind of ointment but I didn't think it was helping too much. At night I use bacitracin and that helps usually. Do you know any kind of remedies or any kind of good multi-vitamin I should try and take?

Although any multivitamin is better than none, Trader Joe's (if you have one near you) sells their own brand of multivitamin called Trader Darwin's. I'd also take some extra vitamin C and either fish oil or Flaxseed Oil. The RDA for vitamin C is 60mg, and I have always felt that was a little too low. (Obviously I'm not alone in that thought, as vitamin C is primarily sold in 500mg tablets.) Vitamin C is a water soluble vitamin, so any part of it your body does not need will be excreted in urine. Too much of it can upset your stomach though, as it is ascorbic acid. I'd take one multivitamin in the morning at breakfast with a vitamin C and the Flaxseed oil, and the same routine at night with dinner, and maybe a Flaxseed oil with lunch. Try to avoid alcohol and or cigarettes as well as they also deplete your body of vitamins and other nutrients. I think you mentioned eating fish in your diet... That's good. Americans don't get enough fish which are the primary providers of essential Omega 3 fatty acids in the diet. Some people take fish oil to supplement their intake of Omega 3. I take Flaxseed oil. It provides the same Omega 3s without the constant, disgusting burping up of fish throughout the day.

Thanks for your help. As of right now, I take a B2 vitamin and a vitamin B complex that has Vitamin C in it... I eat A TON of sushi every week... so I am eating a lot of fish.. not to mention flounder and stuff I have at home. Either which way, do you know what can be put on the chapped areas in the corner to help as well?

The cause of the problem must be addressed. If you eat and take vitamins as you say you do, there might be another cause other than vitamin deficiency. Do you have a compromised immune system? For topical treatment, I'd continue using Bacitracin or Neosporin, especially at night... Slather it on there! Avoid using alcohol or hydrogen peroxide as this will slow healing. If it doesn't clear up, be persistent with your physician about determining the root cause which may include a sensitivity to Zoloft. One of the side effects is dry mouth. Stay hydrated. Drink lots of water. About 1-1.5 liters per day.

You could try applying aloe vera gel at night. Mix in a couple of drops of chamomile and/or geranium essential oils to help healing.

Angular cheilitis is irritating, I had it and used the treatment from angular cheilitis treatment it worked great got rid of it overnight. There's a few websites out there they all use the same remedy. But that was the cheapest one.
Its annoying to have this as nothing seems to get rid of it but at least it can be cured, anyway good luck to you
