I posted a question similar to this one in another topic forum and there were no responses, so I'm posting here hoping that maybe more people will read and be able to answer my questions. I'm very desperate for answers. I was treated for cervical dysplasia in September 2006. The abnormal cells in my cervix were frozen off. I went back every 6 months for two years to get pap smears and every time they were clear. My last visit was in September 2008, it was supposed to be my last one ever. The doctor looked at my cervix and said it looks "almost perfect". He took a pap smear and I left. Yesterday he called me and told me that my test results came back abnormal and I would need to come back in 6 months for a check up. I have so many questions about this. Does this mean that my abnormal cells returned? Is this typically normal? If the cells have returned will I need another treatment? What causes the cells return? I tried speaking with my doctor but could not get a hold of him and I'm so desperate for answers. I'm worried and I keep searching online but nothing is helping me :confused: :(

If the results came back abnormal, do not wait another 6 months before going back to have it checked again. I would go back within the next week or two (or as soon as they can get you back in) and have it rechecked.

Could be a mix up at the lab, but given you have a history of dysplasia, you don't want to wait to know whether the results are truly accurate. If there is a true concern, you would want to act upon it as soon as possible.

It's ridiculous to ask you to wait 6 months and have the worry.

I agree. I'm going crazy right now worrying about what's wrong with me. He didn't seem to concerned about it, so I'm assuming it's nothing too serious and he's making me wait six months to see if it clears on it's own. I just don't understand why it came back two years after treatment. I thought that after two years my body would have fought it off by now. I found out today that my doctor is on holidays until October 21st so I can't speak to him until then but I will as soon as he's back.

Is it possible that the doctor could have made my test come back abnormal because he irritated my cervix? I was bleeding more than usual and the bleeding lasted longer, maybe he did something to irritate me and cause the test to come back abnormal?

Not really, it is the cells themselves that are being looked at. It's not uncommon to have the occasional abnormal screening, and things often do clear up on their own, but given your past treatment, I would think they would want to check on it sooner. More than likely he is not overly concerned or he would have you back in sooner, but do give a call when he is back and find out just what made the results abnormal. Ask him to be more specific as to the suspected cause and hopefully he will be able to alleviate your concerns.

Oh OK. I guess I just have to wait until he comes back. I'm very concerned though because I had a pap in March and it was normal. I slept with my boyfriend for the first time in August without a condom. We were both tested for STD's before and we were both clean. He slept with a girl before me without a condom and that girl sleeps around a lot. Now my pap after I had unprotected sex with him is showing cell changes. I'm scared that he got HPV from her and gave it to me. I know that high-risk types of HPV don't cause warts, so he could have gotten it from her and not known he had it, and then gave it to me :(

It's possible... HPV is actually quite common and many women (and men) have it without realizing it. There are many variations, many that cause no concern and your body fights off, but of course speak with your doctor upon his return.
