Here is one tip for you. Just because a person might be able to do painting quite well, it doesn't mean that they are the best suited to do repairs such as might involve drywall or plaster. Someone else might need to be hired to to those types of repairs.

In this case, you could hire a handyman, a carpenter, or a plasterer to do the general demo. cleanup and repair work. Some of these people will also prime/paint the ceiling to complete the job... some won't so a painter may also be needed here.

You could also hire a general contractor that does all of the above work.

Otherwise, you may also need a plumber to fix the leak that caused the damage (if from pipes) or a roofer if water damage was caused by water damming at the gutters or defect at the roof itself.

Finally, if one of the guys doing the demo. Work damage any wires or the hardwood floors/carpet floors while working on the ceiling you may also need an electrician and flooring guy... but really that would be on the person that damaged the wires/flooring...so shouldn't be your concern if recommending/crossreferencing contractors for a job.

Anyway, there are my thoughts on this. Hope it helped a little!
