Shoplifting and possession of stolen goods(ottawa canada)
It's been so shameful of bringing this topic up every time but I know I have to because I've just been thinking and guessing and fearing.
Please help me and you can say anything because I deserve them.
Okay this is what the police know:
I was caught in Winners for stealing merchandise that worth $89 and from their further search of my bag they found some other merchandise from loblaws which probably worth $200. I was charged for theft under and possession of stolen goods.
This is my first time getting caught, and I know it will be last time as well, I will never do it again, seriously.
I have my reason for stealing ,but I know there isn't any reasons for stealing indeed.
I was short on cash and this coming semester I got to pay a lot of books fees and tuition fees for university and I'm not getting enough from the student loan service.
And that's what I had the mind of doing this sholifting thing.
My worry here is, in ma situation of being charged on two accounts, will my punishment be very extreme? Do you think I still have a chance of getting the diversion program?
Also, is sentencing jail-time seemingly for me in ma case? Will that leave me criminal record?
And I'm a permanent residence here(an asian immigrant), does that make any difference if I was a canadian citizen?
Is anything going to be solved on the court date or it could be more complicated, because I have a very heavy school load next semester and I want to miss as least classes as possible.
I will go and get a legalaid next week by the way but I still want to know from what you know.
    Thanks for your time.

You most probably will have to go to diversions and pay a fine.
There are tons of posts of Canadian first time shop lifting posts here that you might want to read through.
