Would a small (half-dollar size) dial compass work for investigation? What about a ball shaped compass made for cars? I will be placing the compass on a table indoors.

Don't know about compasses detecting ghosts. But here's something you could try. Get a tape recorder. Push the record button and leave the room for as long as the tape runs. Rewind the tape and see what's there. Sometimes you can get "voices" on the tape. They usually run no more than 3 seconds at a time. It seems that ghosts can only transmit sound for about 3 seconds at a time.

Is an EVP Q/A session a good way to contact a relative, even if they died in another state? What if he has "went into the light"? Is it still possible?

Should you have reason to believe that a spirit may be present, you can buy motion sensors, when put either side of a doorway or where ever you choose to place them, a beam will cover the area, should anything break the beam an alarm will sound.

A spirit will visit you, should it choose to do so, no matter where they eventually passed ,it is of no relevance.

Evp can be successful, it may take many attempts, also a form of morse code has been known to come across anything electrical.
