Don't know about compasses detecting ghosts. But here's something you could try. Get a tape recorder. Push the record button and leave the room for as long as the tape runs. Rewind the tape and see what's there. Sometimes you can get "voices" on the tape. They usually run no more than 3 seconds at a time. It seems that ghosts can only transmit sound for about 3 seconds at a time.
