Levy on checking account
Recently I had a levy placed against my checking account in the state of Missouri. When I received copies from my bank the numbers were clearly wrong. I immediately contacted the collections people and asked them about it. They stated they didn't know anything about that. We then made a three way call to the bank where the collections agent said nothing. When the call ended he stated to me that it didn't matter if the number was 9 thousand or 9 million as long as he held the levy on my account. It's almost a 5 thousand dollar difference. I had a family member willing to help me pay this debt, but then refused due to the error. As my family member pointed out if you pay the amount you owe what would stop them from saying I owed more.
Is there anything that I can do to get this corrected ASAP?
Thank you for your help.

Are you saying that they placed a levy on your bank account for nearly 5 thousand more than the they were awarded by the judgment(I'm assuming they obtained a judgment against you).

They will always "hold" more than the actual amount to cover any additional interest and or fees that may have accrued since the original judgment.
Once the real amount has been settled, the remaining amount will be released back into the account.

I'm have no experience with a levy. However, according to this article, you should contact your local courts.
What is a Bank Levy?
If they are trying to collect more than they are allowed to collect, that would be a violation of FDCPA.

Yes they are trying to get nearly 5,000 more than what is owed. After reviewing the paperwork from the court and then from the bank the numbers are almost 5,000 off. This collector is taking every penny I have and continues to call me. Is there anything I do about this.

They are not trying to collect more than the judgment, and any interest and fees that have accrued since the date of the judgment.
