1985 dogde ramcharger will not fire,
OK my truck started fine around 3:30 am to take hubby to his semi. Smelled a heavy exhaust. Thought nothing of it. Drove a mile to the semi and back. No problems.
Went out at 5:20 to take the kids to the babysitters so I could go to work, and when I started it, it sounded like it was clouded. I mean really thick sounding. It died. So I tried to start it again, nothing. Thought maybe I ran out of gas(no gas gauge), got soe gas from the container and added it. No fire. It turns over really well, you can heear the starter.

Starter is brand new, only about 2 months old. Hubby is at work, so I need some suggestions. I even took off the air cleaner cap and added some gas to the carb. No fire. Its almost like it is not getting gas to it, or no fire. I have no clue how in the world to even check for things.

If you added gas to the carb and it didn't fire, It may be lacking spark. I would pull a spark plug, inspect, then since Compression is good? it would be fuel or spark problem. If it was white smoke, it may be a modulator leaking and sucking transmission fluid through engine.

If you like this truck and plan keeping it, I would change cap and rotor also, maybe fuel and air filters. It can only help and may expose something in the process.

. Check all under-dash and under-hood fuses with a test light or multimeter:

. Check for spark. Perform the standard spark test; i.e. remove a spark plug wire and attach it to a properly gapped spark plug, touch the plug to a convenient ground, and observe the spark, while someone cranks the engine. Look for a good, solid spark. Do this for each plug.

If there's no spark, test the Ignition Control Module (ICM) and coil. Here's what the ICM looks like:

While we find your parts, please enter your ZIP Code at PartsAmerica.com

AutoZone and O'Reilly Auto Parts can usually test ICMs and coils for free. I'm not a real fan of bench testing these items, however. I've seen AutoZone test ICMs they said were good turn out to be bad. ICMs are problematic components and I recommend replacing them every 120,000 miles or 10 years, whichever comes first.

90%+ of all "crank but won't start" situations are electrical-related, not fuel.

    . Check for codes.

    . Check for fuel.

That's a totally different picture. Now, it sounds like the starter motor is, in fact, bad.
