Can you be arrested if you shoplift from the store and leave without being caught BUT you are on camera stealing? What happens?

    It does/can happen
What happens depends on how much it was worth for the most part.
    Under/over $5,000.
    First time offense

Yes, if they have the evidence on camera they can attempt to discover who you are, get a warrant and have you arrested. And/or merely stop you the next time you go into the store and the store security see the person whose photo is posted on the security watch list. Most major stores have a board of known shoplifters to be on the watch for.

You beat me to it - once your photo is exchanged with other stores and posted you've got a good chance of being grabbed the next time you walk through the door of any store.

And they may already know who you are and are working on a warrant.

    Hello B:

I don't know why you're concerned with this ONE store. You say that you're a compulsive thief, so you're obviously going to do it again, and again, and even again. Yes, you will get caught.

Maybe you should talk to a shrink. I don't know why you think so little of yourself, that you want to put yourself in jail.

According to the Fourth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, you can be arrested for anything that constitutes "probable cause" and having your image on camera committing a theft is certainly probable cause.

However, an image on videotape does not tell the store where you live or how they can catch up with you to serve a warrant. I was in retail security for 13 years and can tell you that stores do not like to prosecute people unless they have the recovered merchandise in their possession and catch the person as they commit the act.

As mentioned above, they will post the picture and watch out for you the next time. Though it doesn't make sense to me, some stores do not like to share such photos with other stores for privacy reasons.
