    CFL bulbs dying prematurely
    Hi,

We are using CFL bulbs quite successfully throughout the rest of our house, except in the dining room where we have now had 3 die on us within the last 4 months. I believe regular bulbs were dying in the same light fixture too. We swapped the light fixture for the same model and have been having the same issue.

The CFLs had a bulb-style casing around the outside that appeared to crack where it met the contact area in one case and with the regular bulbs we had two where the glass separated from the contact area as well.

Any ideas what could be causing this, I am not sure if its just a cheap fixture or if we have a wiring problem, but the CFLs are kind of expensive to keep replacing at this rate. The fixture is a contractor grade chandalier style which takes 5 bulbs and I believe was only $40 at Lowe's. Also, in at least one instance tapping the CFL caused it to come back on temporarily!

    Thanks!

Loose wiring can cause excessive heat. The wires in this case could be in the junction box in the ceiling or anywhere in the circuits feeding the lap. Another place to look is the switch itself.

Vibration should not affect CFL's like it would conventional lamps.

Have the wiring inspected if you can't do it yourself.
