    State Taxes
I lived and worked in Indiana into early July 07. In July I moved to New York and in August I began working in New Jersey. I realize I need to file in all three states but am confused about residency. Can you tell me what I would be considered in each of the states? I would appreciate any help you can give! Thanks!

If you live and have an established home in New York than you are a resident of New York. You would file non resident taxes in the other two states.

You would file Part year resident taxes in New York since you did not live there all year and non resident taxes in the other two states.

I would have a tax specialist do your taxes for you like HR Block, hewlett Jackson, or some other specialist or a CPA.

    1. You will file Indiana tax return as part year resident and report income till July 07 from Indiana sources.

    2. They you will file NJ return as nonresident (as your were in NJ to earn the income) and report the income you earned in NJ.

    3. Then you will file NY income for period from Aug 07 to Dec 07 as part year resident and report all the income you earned during this period including reported on NJ return. You will also claim credit for taxes paid to NJ.
