I don't even know if burping is the right word. But every five minutes or so, our toilet has been making gurgling sounds, like it's burping. No water overflows, and it flushes just fine. It has only been doing it today. What is this?

Hello, how old is your house? And are you getting sewer odors in the bathroom? It sounds like your sewerline is starting to backup and its pushing air up through the toilet. Possibly improper venting is not allowing the air to escape to the atmosphere above the roof. It could be strong back pressure from the main if your tied to a city main sewer system.

Is anyone using any water in the home when the toilet is burping/bubbling?? You say, just started today.. huh?

If no one is using any water when this is happening then it is possible that the city/town may be power flushing/jetting the main sewer lines in the streets causing a back pressure situation into your home (should have dissapated up and out the vent though... so vent stack could be partially blocked).

Can always call the city/town and ask them if they have been working on sewer lines in your area.

Otherwise, watch for a couple days, let us know what occurs.

When your fixtures begain to talk back to you they do it in two ways. They "gurgle" atcha or they "bubble" atcha. The "gurgle" is caused by vacuum caused by a blocked vent. The "bubble" is caused by back pressure due to a partial blockage What happens is that when you flush or drain the discharge runs down the drain line and hits the partial blockage and bounces back sending a bubble of air ahead of it. A partial blockage will also cause a backup sending soap or crud into a fixture until it can drain away. What exactly do you have? Cheers, Tom
