Does she have any medical conditions? Is she on any medications? Both of these can cause brittle nails.

I for one, just keep tons of polish on them and when washing dishes, etc, use rubber gloves.

I found that Nivea body lotion when used as a hand lotion actually strengthened my nails. I tried everything under the sun and nothing worked. Odd how just switching hand lotions made my nails harder.

Your wife might want to look into taking a supplement. That can also help with your wife's brittle nails.

I am a nail technician. If your wife's nails are brittle, then they are already too hard. She needs a nail treatment that will hydrate (add moisture) to them. This will bring back the balance to her nails.

A good rule of thumb to follow is this: if you can bend your nails and they peel at the free edge, then you need a nail strengthener/hardener. Once your nails are hard then you stop using the product. If they are already too hard or brittle and break all the time, then you need something to add moisture. OPI makes several nail treatments to cover all these conditions. The important thing is to monitor your nails and stop using the product when you've achieved your goal.

I always recommend a good cuticle oil to everyone... good for the cuticles and the nails absorb it as well. I particularly like Solar Oil by CND. Hope this helps!
