Symmons model a temptrol doesn't switch from shower to tub anymore
Hello, I have a symmons model a temptrol shower valve. The spindle doesn't switch from shower to tub and vice versa. The spindle also pulls out from the fixture. Any advice? Thanks in advance.

    Hi Dave.

I know the valve real well and you have a defective spindle handle or a defective spindle cartridge...or both! At this point, you are probably best to purchase a new trim kit from home depot or lowes. I suggest the ALLURA series trim kit as it is an upgrade over the traditional trim kit (see image). This kit will include all new trim and a new spindle handle.

Now, to remove the spindle assembly (see image) is not easy...even by plumbers' standards. Here, Symmons themselves recommend a 5/16" lag bolt to remove the spindle. You'll usually need an allen-wrench (1/4" if I remember correctly) to remove a retainer nut (not shown), but it could also be a retainer plate held in by two screws, and then you screw the lag bolt into the diverter spindle about a 1/4 to 1/2" and then, believe it or not, you YANK the spindle out by the lag bolt!!! Be warned, it doesn't always come out easily!

Think on this and then post back. Removing a stuck spindle is hard, but not impossible, and this valve is worth saving, I promise!
