What type of Identification number do you use on federal income taxes when you are married, spouse does not have green card or ID number and lives out of the country.
I am married, my spouse is not a US citizen and lives out of the country and does not have a Social Security number or a green card. She has applied for one so can I still claim married and 2 dependents, she does work and I provide income...
If she lives and works OUTSIDE of the U.S. and is NOT a U.S. citizen, she is NOT eligible for a Social Security Number.
She CAN get an Individual Tax Identification Number (ITIN) by filing a joint U.S. tax return with you and submitting Form W-7 when you file the tax return.
She must submit with the Form W-7 her original passport or a clear color photocopy of her passport that is certified as a true copy of an authentic passport by the government that issued the passport or have a Certifying Acceptance Agent (CAA) authenticate the passport.
If you need professional help filing the return and submitting the Form W-7, I AM a CAA. You can email me at the email address in my profile.
