Twisted the green and red wires together on the thermostat, t and the blower came on, what does this mean?

All you did was bypass the thermostat, making it run in "fan only" mode.

If the thermostat was not responsive I would suspect you have a bad thermostat or it is programmed incorrectly (switches on back of t-stat).
